The instant read thermometer from OXO is about 7” long, with a plastic body and a thin metal probe, which is kept in a pen-like protective cover. The display is larger than most thermometers, and easy to read from a good distance away. The large display has three digits, so it can show temperatures from -40 degrees to 302 degrees. So you can check the temperature of your beer as well as your ribs, just remember to wipe the probe if it’s been in raw meat.
There is a slider on the back to change the display from degrees Centigrade to degrees Fahrenheit, pretty much a set and forget kind of thing. Otherwise there’s only one other control, the on/off button on the top.
The thermometer probe cover has a pocket clip and a rotating display that shows the recommended temperature you’re looking for while cooking a variety of meats, in both Centigrade and Fahrenheit. It’s powered by a button battery, which comes ready fitted. In theory you can change the battery, but in practice it isn’t the easiest task.
The digital cooking thermometer function isn’t quite that, although it is pretty quick if you get it in the right place within the meat.
The probe is thin, but quite sturdy, and easy to insert. The display section is made of plastic, so it can’t be left in the meat for any length of time, just take the reading and remove it. And it isn’t waterproof, so don’t throw it in the dishwasher when you’re cleaning up afterwards.
I think this model of quick read thermometers is very well designed, apart from the battery compartment. It does look a little like something you’d find in the doctor’s medical kit, but I like it. It’s easy to carry, easy to read and use, and comes with a handy cover with the temperature reminders on it.
